How to Measure Your Space Properly Before Requesting a Space Plan

If you're planning a new workspace layout, whether it’s booths, tiered seating, collaboration areas or focused work zones, accurate measurements and clear photos are essential. The more precise the information you provide, the faster your designer can create a space plan that works first time.

Here’s a simple guide to getting it right.

1. Measure the Full Room

Start with the basics:

  • Overall length and width
  • Ceiling height
  • Measure each wall individually (don’t assume they’re identical)

If the room isn’t square, sketch the shape and measure each section separately. Always record measurements in millimetres for accuracy.

2. Measure Everything That Can’t Move

Designers need to know every fixed element in the space. Measure and note:

  • Doors (including which way they open)
  • Windows (including sill height)
  • Columns and pillars
  • Radiators

For each item, measure both its size and its position from the nearest wall corner.

3. Take Clear, Wide Photos

Good photos prevent mistakes and speed up design.

Make sure to:

  • Stand in each corner and take wide shots of the room
  • Photograph every wall straight-on
  • Capture the ceiling and lighting layout
  • Show doors, windows and fixed elements clearly

4. Create a Simple Sketch

You don’t need to be technical. Just draw:

  • The room outline
  • Wall lengths
  • Door and window positions
  • Ceiling height

Label everything clearly and send a photo of the sketch with your measurements.

5. Provide Context

Measurements are only half the story. Let your designer know:

  • How many people will use the space
  • What activities happen there
  • Any storage or technology requirements
  • Budget range (if known)

The more context you provide, the better the layout will perform.

Why This Matters

Accurate information prevents:

  • Furniture not fitting
  • Installation delays
  • Costly redesigns
  • Compliance issues

When measurements and photos are clear, your designer can create a space plan that works beautifully, safely and efficiently from day one.
